Why are so many bunnies abandoned?

When we share with people that we run a domestic bunny rescue, they often ask, “Where are the bunnies from? Are they abandoned? Do people… leave them outside?” It’s a strange concept for most people, but it’s true.

Bunnies are the third most popular companion animal in the United States. Many people think that bunnies are easy "starter pets." They are often surprised that bunnies require veterinary care including spaying and neutering, a lot of space, different types of food, and can live up to 10-14 years. As a result, bunnies are frequently abandoned outside when their human no longer wants to care for them. However, releasing a bunny outside does NOT give them a new life - it is a death sentence. Dumping a bunny outside inevitably results in them dying of exposure, illness, being killed by another animal, or hit by a car. Bunnies rescued by RVA SBS are the lucky ones.
